As the Internet matures, you’re going to see this more and more: People taking free information, inventions, protocols etc. that have been developed by scientists or groups and packaging them into digital information products.
Perhaps there is a way you can apply this technique to your niche and package up your own information product?
Here’s a great example of what I’m talking about…
If you go to LibertyGenerator.com you’ll watch a video (there are no other options) by supposed Iowan farmer Abe. Never mind that the narrator does not make a single mistake while he’s talking (very difficult for a non-professional voice actor to do!) and his delivery sounds like a professional voice actor. The information presented is still genuine.
Note that it is also presented as a story – Abe’s story of how he was going to lose his farm. See my other blog post on the importance of storytelling when you’re selling anything.
Anyway, for $37 “Abe” will sell you the blueprints for how to construct your own Liberty Generator to reduce or completely eliminate your power bills.
However, only 10 minutes of a Google search revealed to me that what “Abe” is selling is a Biogas Generator. And you can get the complete description, along with free blueprints to build your own from here: Re-energy.ca
In fact, some of the planted PR around the Liberty Generator has even swiped the homepage photo from Re-energy.ca!
Is this Liberty Generator information product illegal? Is it unethical?
Neither. They have not swiped a private, or proprietary invention. They have simply packaged up information that is widely available in numerous countries, journals, websites, etc. and attached a story and a price tag to it. And here’s a tip – if you visited the Re-Energy link, you’ll see that Re-energy.ca also provides free and complete instructions for how to build your own solar oven, wind turbine and hydro generator… hmmmm – does that give you any good ideas?
